The Delivery & Installation Process for a Solar System

Solar panels use a technology called photovoltaics (PV) to convert sunlight directly into electricity. When sunlight hits the panels, it creates an electrical current that can be used to power your home. The DC current in your panels goes to an inverter to be converted to the AC current suitable to be used at your home or exported to the grid.

While direct sunlight is ideal, solar panels can still generate some electricity on cloudy days. However, for optimal performance, they need unobstructed sunlight for most of the day.

Yes, quite well actually, unless they are covered by the snow. In fact, solar panels are more efficient when they are colder, and this helps to offset some of the lower energy production due to the lower angle of the sunrays. The good news is that they shed their snow much faster than the rest of the roof. 

In general, it may not be worth the effort to clear the snow from the solar panels as we design the size of the system considering the overall annual snow loss; but if you must do so, long poles to clear snow can also be used. Note that it could be very dangerous if you are working under the roof or standing on a ladder on the side of the roof, as the snow might fall on you or tip the ladder over and cause you injury. Take extreme caution. Hence in most situations, we recommend not doing anything to clear the snow as it tends to be cleared quite fast on its own. Despite these challenges, winter losses are less significant than you might think due to shorter daylight hours.

Easily 40 or 50 years, maybe even more. Just in the first 25 years, our solar panels are guaranteed to keep at least 85% of their original production capacity. Most, age is much lower than that. Like anything, solar panels degrade in the sun, but the panels we use degrade at only lower than 0.5% per year. Solar panels have the best warranties of most products in the world with 25-year performance warranties guaranteeing 85% energy production. As a real-life example: Panels at the Kortright Center in Toronto installed in the 70’s are still producing about 90% of their original power.

If the roof age is more than 15 years or the roof shingles have less than 5-7 years of lifetime left in them, then it’s best to replace them first. You may consider to only do the portion under the solar panels, or do the entire roof, depending on the condition. Solar panels provide more than just clean energy. They also act as a protective shield for your roof. Solar panels shade the roof, shielding it from direct sunlight. This protection helps extend the life of the shingles they cover. By preventing excessive exposure to UV rays, your roof stays in better condition over time. Should shingle replacement be needed, rest assured that we collaborate with reputable roofers. The upfront cost of a solar system can vary depending on factors like system size, brand, and local regulations. However, government incentives and tax credits can significantly reduce the overall cost. Typically a solar system will pay back for itself in energy savings in approximately 14-16 years. Over the 25 – 30 years, a typical solar system will save you about twice the original cost of installation, or more, depending on the rising energy costs. 

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Occasional cleaning to remove dust or debris is generally enough to keep them functioning efficiently.

The best type of roof would be the one that allows for the most cost-effective installation. That would be a composite roof, southern exposure, not too steep, no shading, with enough unobstructed space for the solar panels.

Planning, configuring, permits and installation of your solar energy system can take up to a few weeks. However, the installation process itself can typically be completed in only a few days, in many cases even less. 

Do you want to have power when the grid goes down? If so, then you should look into adding battery backup to your solar energy system. Battery backup can recharge itself from your solar during the day, supplying endless power even when the grid is down.

The 10-year cost of ownership calculations have shown that adding battery backup to a solar energy system is more affordable than adding a gas-powered emergency generator, not to mention a lot quieter. 

All solar energy systems are equipped with a system quick disconnect.  Many hazards occur during a home fire. Occupants should exit any unsafe building immediately and call emergency personnel. Solar panels will not explode or catch fire. They can, however, melt. The material is mostly aluminum, glass, silicon, and some plastic.
